Gender Affirming Post-Surgical Care

Are you scheduled for a gender-affirming surgical care procedure, such as chest reconstruction or vaginoplasty? While these procedures are crucial to the improved mental health and overall well-being of transgender people, they are major surgeries–and like all surgeries, require rehabilitation afterward and may benefit from prehabilitation prior

At Vitality Women’s Physical Therapy in Elmhurst and Chicago, IL, we offer holistic pre and post-surgical rehabilitation for trans men, trans women, and non-binary individuals. We ensure a comprehensive approach to care, considering all factors including your emotional, mental and physical wellness.

Our team of compassionate physical therapists can help you prepare and rehabilitate for both top and bottom surgeries, ensuring a successful procedure and allowing you to live a full, happy life exactly as you were meant to.

Rehabilitation for Top Surgeries

Top surgeries include breast augmentations and chest reconstruction surgery. Breast augmentation involves an increase in breast size through implants and/or fat transfers to create a more feminine appearance in the chest, while chest reconstruction involves removing breast tissue and creating a more masculine appearance in the chest. These surgeries can limit the range of motion in your upper body and lead to difficulties with daily activities.

Our therapists will work with you on exercises to improve the mobility of your chest, shoulders, arms, neck, and back and encourage blood flow to the area, which helps facilitate healing. We’ll also let you know when it’s safe to return and assist you in your return to physical activities such as weightlifting.

Rehabilitation for Bottom Surgeries

Bottom surgeries, whether a vaginoplasty, phalloplasty, or metoidioplasty (clitoral release/enlargement), require a great deal of care both before and after the procedure. The entire pelvic floor is involved in these surgeries, meaning that these surgeries can potentially lead to several different issues:

  • Urinary challenges (increased urgency, pain with urination, etc.)
  • Sexual dysfunction (decreased sensation, painful intercourse)
  • Pelvic pain
  • Bowel impairment
  • Pain or irritation while sitting or from clothing/underwear

A dedicated prehab and rehab program will help minimize the risk of these complications. Our therapists will guide you through a customized physical therapy program focused on the pelvic floor muscles, including but not limited to tailored exercises, manual therapy, and pain management modalities.
